Info

The time travel back to the first half of the 20th century in Leevaku. It is a story of one man, a family, and a community about big ideas, the obstacles of everyday life, and humanity. In July and August, the visitors can experience the historical and cultural heritage of the Leevaku, the beautiful nature of the Võhandu River, and and local food and beverage.

The community performance “The Gold Miner of Leevaku” is coming again!

Where can you find the tallest sauna chimney in Europe, towering at 50 meters? You’ll find out by coming to see the summer performance of The Gold Miner of Leevaku. This is the story of outrageous ideas, intergenerational relationships, successes, and failures experienced precisely a century ago here in Leevaku.

The story revolves around local visionary Artur Reinomägi and his decision to build a colossal brick factory in Leevaku – the event that marked its 100th anniversary in 2023. In the community performance, directed by Marko Mäesaar, professional actors Viire Valdma, Tiina Mälberg and Ken Rüütel are joined by local amateurs.

A total of six summer performances are delivered throughout July and August, providing an exciting peek into local history, culture, language, and environment. Stunning nature and local food, the Räpina Youth Wind Orchestra, and the musicians add to the experience. NGO Leevakk organizes the community performance.

Leevaku village opens its gates to guests two hours before the performances start.
A lively concert with songs and instrumental music follows the Thursday and Saturday performances.

“The Gold Miner of Leevaku” organized by the NGO Leevakk is completed within the framework of the South Estonian community program (supported by Leader groups) and is part of the main program of Tartu 2024- the European Capital of Culture.
