Info
Tõnu Kõrvits’s composition “The Sound of Wings” is about flying, dreams, courage and unconditional love. The story is inspired by American aviator Amelia Mary Earhart, who on July 21, 1932 became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. According to the lyricist Doris Kareva, the quintessence of the work lies in Amelia's thought: Courage and generosity are the basis of soul bliss.

“The Sound of Wings”
Tõnu Kürvits, composer:
“The Sound of Wings” is the third and last part of my mental trilogy, which also includes “Lageda laulud” and “Sina oled valgus ja hommik”. Tallinna Kammerorkester and Risto Joost have helped translate and create the texts of all three works. “The Sound of Wings” is the brightest work of the trilogy. It is a song about flying, dreams, and unconditional love.”
Tõnu Kõrvits was inspired by American aviator Amelia Mary Earhart, who was awarded the Air Force Cross of Merit for being the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean on July 21, 1932. He set other flight records and wrote books about his flight experiences.
Doris Kareva, lyricist:
“Amelia Earhart was introduced to me by Tõnu Kõrvits. Mary S. Lovell’s book “The Sound of Wings” about the life and work of this extraordinary woman really had a winging effect. Perhaps the most cryptic of the texts inspired by Amelia’s letters or poems, “One Love” is based on the last signal that Amelia sent on the way and which did not reach the end. In my opinion, the quintessence of the piece is contained in Amelia’s thought: Courage and generosity are the basis of soul happiness. It deserves to be remembered every day.
Maarjamaa Philharmonic: Let’s share passion in music!
We share the passion that arises from the common joy of making music – the joy that is born between the musician and the listener and rings in the soul long after the last note has fallen silent. The Maarjamaa Philharmonic was born from this passion and longing to share music – for the musicians to make music and for the audience to empathize.
More than a century ago, in 1900, Estonia’s first symphony orchestra and choir were founded at the Estonian Students’ Society in Tartu under the leadership of composer and pedagogue Aleksander Lätte, and folk symphony concerts began to be given. This spirit is carried forward by the choir and orchestra of Maarjamaa Philharmonic called to life by conductor Lilyan Kaiv. As then, the philharmonics are motivated by a passionate desire to educate themselves and their audiences, and to enrich our musical world with professional performances, new arrangements and new compositions.
In order to maintain a high level of creativity, the choir and the orchestra consistently perform a diverse repertoire. The Maarjamaa Philharmonic always has exciting new musical s
