Info

Tartu celebrates New Year's Eve with three light performances on Vabaduse puiestee.

The program begins on December 31 at 11:30 PM with the final performance of the European Capital of Culture, “Jää ja loo”, which was also showcased at the cultural capital’s closing event on November 30. This will be followed by video greetings from the Mayor of Tartu and the President of the Republic of Estonia.

The New Year will be welcomed with a light and laser show accompanied by music. At 12:15 AM, the light performance “Desire” will be shown, followed by “Choices” at 12:45 AM. The performances will be repeated on January 1, starting at 6:00 PM.

Light show schedule:

December 31

The light shows are created and presented by the team of MTÜ Öövalgel. “Desire” tells a story about what people truly long for and where they invest their time and energy. “Choices” speaks about the endless decisions in life and how we can influence and maintain our attitudes. Tartu 2024’s closing performance, “Jää ja loo”, symbolizes perseverance and continuous creation.

Come celebrate with Tartu!

Tartu’s Christmas city, including its cafés and ice rink, will be open until 10 PM on December 31 and from 12 PM to 10 PM on January 1.

For several years, Tartu has celebrated New Year’s Eve without fireworks to reduce excessive noise and environmental harm. The ban on high-category fireworks is part of Tartu’s guideline for organizing environmentally friendly events.
