Info

Japanese forest bathing experience is a part of the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 side programme. During forest bathing, we move around in nature for an hour after which we reflect on the experience for approximately an hour. The event is directed at all interested adults (18+) who are able to move around in nature independently. Forest bathing increases physical and mental well being.

Forest bathing is a Japanese tradition which positive effects on the physical and mental health of humans have been thoroughly researched throughout decades. During forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku, people move around in nature in a guided manner, applying all five senses. It has been found that regular, but even one-time forest bathing event increases general well-being, reduces stress and anxiety, improves sleep, mood and boosts the immune system. During forest training, you are guided through nature by Tartu Erakool teachers Helen Altin-Ilves and Anneli Armus-Juhkam who have received appropriate training in Japan, in the birthplace of shinrin-yoku, Agematsu, by Future With Forest Foundation. Since the goal is to spread the forest bathing practice to Estonian youth, training in Japan was supported by Education and Youth Board. Today’s world puts a great strain on the mental health of youngsters, thus, teachers, parents and youth workers are especially welcome to the events as this method can help improve the mental health of young people. After moving around in the nature for an hour, the participants can listen to Helen and Anneli’s experience of forest bathing in Japan, reflect on the experience and discuss possible ways of applying the method in mental health care. The events will take place on May 18, June 29, July 27 and August 17 2024 near Elva, in Illi Forest, starting from RMK Illi Camping Site (https://loodusegakoos.ee/kuhuminna/puhkealad/tartu-jogeva-puhkeala/illi-telkimisala). NB! On June 29, the event will be held in English! One event is open to a maximum of 15 participants and registration is compulsory. Register here: https://forms.gle/PoT75J75EYmwtwcJ9
