Info

Tartu is a dog-friendly city, and you can find many dog-friendly events in the Tartu 2024 program. However, there are important considerations before bringing a dog to an event and factors to consider when you, as an organiser, decide whether to allow dogs to your event. How can we ensure pleasant cultural experiences for all? We welcome dog owners, culture enthusiasts, and event organisers.

During the Tartu 2024 Culture Capital of Europe opening week, a lecture will be held to help event organizers make final decisions and provide dog owners with background information on planning their cultural year when considering their dogs.
How can dogs and dog lovers coexist amicably with culture enthusiasts, some of whom may not be dog lovers?

Kristina Mägi (Hea Koer) has been a dog owner’s trainer for almost 17 years, having trained over 4000 dogs and people. Over this time, she has gathered essential insights about dog-human interactions.

Kristina knows why dog owners bring their dogs to various events. She has attended a play with her first dog… (This story continues in the lecture, and this decision will be evaluated)
Both dog owners and Tartu 2024 event organizers will receive recommendations during the lecture. Dog owners will gain an overview of which events they could bring their dogs to and the criteria for decision-making. Event organizers will gain a good understanding of what to consider when allowing dogs at their events, covering potential hazards and how to organize the event and environment so that dogs truly feel comfortable.
Additionally, we will explore dogs’ stress signals to make it easier for organizers and dog owners to recognize when a dog is not feeling well. Recognizing stress signals helps ensure the safety of the event because a stressed dog in a noisy or chaotic environment may suffer and become more prone to aggression. It is crucial to recognize when a dog has had enough.
Finally, we will discuss the meaning of terms such as “well-behaved dog,” who is allowed at the event and what it depends on, and what a “dog-friendly city” means.

The event is in Estonian.
