“Slow”
Genre: Fiction (Drama) | Duration: 1h 48 min. | Director: Marija Kavtaradze | Country: Lithuania
A film which only raises questions, revokes personal feelings and discusses sexuality but gives no explanations is rarely so intimate, romantic, lovely, and heartbreaking.
Sign language interpreter Dovydas meets professional dancer Elena. Feisty Elena has ended all previous toxic relationships. Calm loner Dovydas is keen to try something new. They go out to talk, drink, eat, and dance, but Dovydas has an unusual secret.
The impeccable casting of non-professional Greta Grinevičiūtė and experienced stage actor Kęstutis Cicėnas creates evident chemistry, and the seemingly accidental bond is portrayed very convincingly. Former winner of the Baltic Competition Marija Kavtaradzė (“Summer Survivors”) doesn’t leave much space for improvisations, but the wonderfully written dialogue sounds spontaneous, tender, and sincere. Carefully chosen Lithuanian and English songs play on the heartstrings.
The Lithuanian Candidate for the Oscars 2024 is about blossoming modern relationships, sexualities, bodies, and feelings.
