Baltic Film Days will take place on 29th–31st of August in 2024 to showcase the highlights of Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian cinema. This time, in order to celebrate the most important event in Estonia in 2024, Baltic Film Days are going to be held in Tartu.

“A Limousine the Colour of Midsummer’s Eve”

Genre: Feature film (Comedy/Drama) | Duration: 1h 28 min. | Director: Jānis Streičs | Country: Latvia

The movie begins when old auntie Mirta (Mirta Saknīte) succeeds in a lottery and wins a car which every Soviet citizen longs for – a Zhiguli car. Because of her old age, she cannot use the car herself. And when the word spreads out about her luck, different family members all of the sudden come to her countryside house to ‘be helpful’ in favor of getting the car after aunt’s death. A comical game unfolds on the farm – who fights for the car, who fights for something more.

“A Limousine in Colour of Midsummer’s Eve” (1981) is a simple and engaging comedy film, voted as the best Latvian film of all time by the people of Latvia in a referendum in 1995. The film stars the most popular filmmakers of that time, such as actor Uldis Dumpis and director Jānis Streičs. The film’s music was composed by the legendary Raimonds Pauls, whose songs are well known among most Latvians. The much-acclaimed Latvian cult film has been included in the Latvian cultural canon, i.e. it is valued as a national cultural heritage.

It is a Latvian cult film, which has great meaning for both Latvians and Estonians. Thanks to the success of the film, the Suur-Munamägi (mountain) of South Estonia, which is portrayed in the film as a desirable image, has attracted a lot of attention among Latvians and has become a must-see tourist destination in Estonia.
