Arts of Survival in the Baltic: Russias Fututes and their implications
Panel discussion “Arts of Survival on the Border with Russia”

12 September 17.00 at Hotel Lydia Event Centre (Ülikooli 14, Tartu)

The Cambridge University Centre for Geopolitics, the Centre for Eurasian and Russian Studies of the University of Tartu and the Baltic Defence College are holding a public panel discussion ‘Arts of Survival on the Border with Russia’.

Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine has profound consequences for countries that share a border with the Russian Federation. The war evokes painful memories of the past and shapes the present in a myriad of ways. The outcomes of this war will have far-reaching implications for the future. What does it take to ensure the security, stability, and prosperity of the Baltic countries in this context? What constitutes credible military deterrence? How to safeguard democracy and the rule of law, bolster social cohesion and uphold liberal values? What does societal resilience mean in practical, applied terms, and how to build it?

The invited speakers include Dr. Una Bergmane (University of Helsinki), Mr. Rainer Saks (CybExer Technologies), Dr. Asta Maskaliunaite (Baltic Defence College) and Piret Ehin (University of Tartu). The discussion will be moderated by Prof. Emma Widdis (University of Cambridge).

As capacity is limited, guests are asked to register to the event by 10 September.

The panel discussion is part of a broader seminar ‘Arts of Survival in the Baltic: Russia’s Futures and Their Implications’ which aims to consider the various implications for the region of changes in Russia as a consequence of the current war in Ukraine. This fits in with the programme of Tartu – European Capital of Culture 2024, whose overall leading theme is ‘Arts of Survival’. The event is being supported by the British Embassies in Tallinn and Riga.
