Organic Lamb Celebration

The small but delightful Kihnu lamb will help find solutions for the sustainability of Estonia’s rural life.

Story

What could today’s sustainable rural life look like? It is a question which is perfectly symbolised by the small yet tough Kihnu native sheep. Major producers do not view raising Kihnu native sheep as profitable and shepherds are becoming fewer and fewer. Has the time of the denizen who has occupied those lands for at least 3000 years come to an end? Or is there a path to a new way of life in the countryside, where closeness to nature and innovation, permaculture and indigenous breeds all have their place?

Kogemus

A considerable part of the rural population works in cities and working in the fields is not a part of their daily lives. Is there a future for living in the countryside when its cheaper and more convenient to live in the city? Together we will create a vision of sustainable rural life: a cultural life that strengthens the community, sustainable small-scale organic farming with a place for a meaningful and thoughtful lifestyle that is close to nature but also innovative. A perfect opportunity to experience the feeling of being part of a village community.

In August 2024, the village of Prangli in Põlva County will host a varied programme of activities for the whole family. Together they will explore new things to do in the countryside and rediscover old skills that tend to get lost in city life. You can discover a new food farm in the making at Kullaaugu farm and learn from experts how to handle horses. A real culinary experience is provided by a country mutton steak that has been cooked under the ground for 12 hours.

One of the evenings will culminate with a concert: a musical party evening on a picturesque pasture by the pond. Begins with Nordic fusion music from Mari Sild Muusika ja Mõtted (Mari Sild, Deny Lester) with guest performer Oskar Varik Kuldkepp. Continues with Estonian folk music from the duo Alamakstud Härrad (Romet Allingu, Brett Hiiob).

Impact

The event introduces the unique landscape and local lifestyle of Southern Estonia. A strong focus will be placed on rural sustainability through local indigenous tribes, developing community well-being and linking historical knowledge with modern solutions.
