Tartu Cat Tales

Step into the cat yard and experience snippets of the lives of Tartu's cats.

Story

Have you ever wondered what kind of life cats lead, what they feel, and what they dream about? Come and ask them yourself! In this interactive performance aimed at children, little spectators can feel like cats themselves and listen to the stories of Tartu City cats. The performance is followed by a discussion with the Tartu Animal Shelter.

Experience

On August 17, 2024, the yard of the Tartu Toy Museum will become home to all kinds of cats. Each one has its own character and story to tell the audience.

“Tartu Cat Stories” introduces Tartu through the tales of cats from different parts of the city. The production is a collaboration with amateur actors from the Assisi Franciscuse Selts (Tartu Animal Shelter), Tartu, and South Estonia. If desired, little spectators can also get a cat face painting before the performance.

Following the performance, there will be a discussion led by the non-profit organisation Assisi Franciscuse Selts about pets and urban animals, and how to notice and help animals in need. What animals need besides a full stomach.

The children’s play “Tartu Cat Tales” is created by a non-profit organisation Cirsium and will be performed three times (August 17 at 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM). The performances are open to kindergarten and primary school children along with their parents.

Mõju

The production introduces Tartu from a new perspective and, through direct experience, increases children’s interest in theatre and their empathy towards homeless animals. The discussion on urban nature and animals directs children’s attention to Tartu as a green city and its importance.
