On September 14, 2024, the village of Kavastu in Luunja parish invites everyone to a big fish and ukha party, which will take place in the manor park, on the beach area of the Emajõgi River, and in the harbor. The main event of this celebration will be the ukha-making competition and the awarding of the best soup masters.
In addition to cooking, you can also cast your line at the festival! Try your luck in a 60-minute fishing competition or participate in a workshop if you want to learn how to catch a fish with donkas (bottom fishing) and hand lines, spinning rods and bait baskets (feeder fishing), how to clean fish or how to make your own fishing gear. Moreover, you can educate yourself about water safety and environmental protection, as well as have fun and get healthy with archery and stand-up paddling. Today’s knowledge will be complemented by ancestral fishing techniques and methods: ice fishing in winter, garfish fishing in autumn and dragnet fishing will be showcased. Participation is open to all ages.
The varied cultural program is also linked to water and fishing! A fisherman’s storytelling competition will determine the best wordsmiths, and Europe’s only remaining hand-operated river raft is waiting to take you for a ride on the Emajõgi. Fishing supplies and fish products (food and fish skin products, handicrafts, etc.) will be available at the folk fair. In the food area visitors will find delicious fish dishes and a musical headliner will get the party in the right mood.
