European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 chosen as Tartu’s Act of the Year

In a joint competition of Tartu City Government and the Tartu Postimees newspaper, Tartu citizens voted the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 as the most important event of the year.

At today’s recognition event in the Town Hall, the Mayor Urmas Klaas and Chief Editor of the Tartu Postimees Rannar Raba thanked the people involved in the organisation of the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024, as well as other doers who stood out in 2024 and were highly appreciated by the public of Tartu in the competition for the act of the year.

According to Mayor Urmas Klaas, the result of the Act of the Year competition showed that the ECoC title year, with its programme and message, resonated with the people of Tartu. “I would like to thank all the hundreds of cultural organisers from both Tartu and South Estonia who organised more than 1,600 diverse events, the Tartu 2024 Foundation, and the large audiences. Even though this wonderful year is now officially over, I am confident that the impact of this biggest ever joint project in Southern Estonia will continue for years to come.”

Honey DNA test created by Tartu researchers
New barge “Suur Sume”
Gymnastics club Rütmika medals at the World Championships (bronze medal for the elite group of Siidisabad and silver medal for the junior class of Rebasesabade).

Nearly 5500 voters took part in the vote on the City of Tartu and the Tartu Postimees’s website.

Tartu City Government and Tartu Postimees organised Tartu’s 27th Act of the Year.
