BORDERS

A concert that expands geographical, conceptual, and creative boundaries, paying homage to the border region of Põlvamaa.

Story

Borders and living near them are deeply ingrained in the Estonian identity. Exploring borders as a multifaceted concept from various perspectives raises awareness of migration, conflicts, exile, and psychological boundaries. The art created in collaboration between Estonian and French musicians forges new connections that transcend national borders. New musical works, inspired by the experiences of borderland residents, embody the spirit of the community. And isn’t it one of music’s purposes to constantly push boundaries?

Experience

“Borders” is a special concert by the French collective David Chevallier Trio and Estonian singer Anett Tamm, featuring Collegium Musicale, conducted by Endrik Üksvärav. The repertoire consists of new compositions that explore the theme of borders from various angles: exile, discovery, migration, encounters, experimentation, and conflicts. The music is composed by David Chevallier, with lyrics by Anett Tamm.

On December 2-3, 2024, the joint residency of the musicians and the chamber choir will take place, culminating in a concert at 19.00 on December 3 at the Põlva Cultural Center’s theatre hall. The concert will feature the premiere of two new Estonian-language pieces, with lyrics written by Anett during her residency in the border villages near Lake Peipsi in the Autumn of 2023. These songs are inspired by the experiences and thoughts of Põlvamaa residents regarding life near the border.

The concert in Põlva is part of David Chevallier Trio’s and Anett Tamm’s tour through France, Finland, Estonia, and Latvia.

Impact

The project places the unique character and experiences of the local community in a European context, offering new interpretations of borders and collaboration. Through the concert tour, music inspired by South Estonia will reach audiences in various countries.
