The event series dedicated to alternative music focuses on various music styles and the subcultures surrounding them: raw & hypnotic techno, tech and minimal house, electro, breakbeat, etc. These genres do not often receive much attention in mainstream media, and the associated culture tends to be stigmatised in Estonia. The Black Box team is committed to breaking negative stereotypes and raising awareness. Therefore, the event series is accompanied by a culture focused on respect and behaviour that values the well-being of partygoers. The organisers carefully ensure that there is no discrimination against minority groups during the events and encourage participants not to take photos or videos to protect the privacy of attendees.
The Black Box party series began in the summer of 2021. With a unique sound and lighting setup and atmosphere in Tartu, the events offer participants experiences comparable to those found at parties in Berlin, London, or Paris.
The Black Box special event, part of the European Capital of Culture program, will take place on September 6th and will differ from previous parties in terms of scale, location, artists, and technical solutions. Representatives from various subcultures are actively involved in organising this major event in Tartu’s nightlife, particularly regarding production and design. The event will feature top local artists and international performers who are often seen on the stages of renowned European clubs, performing in the above-ground and underground halls of the Aparaaditehas.
For music enthusiasts already familiar with the Black Box party series, its atmosphere, and philosophy, the event offers a more powerful cultural experience than ever before. For a broader audience, it is a great opportunity to dispel existing prejudices, discover new music genres, and become part of an inclusive and supportive community.
