The Buildings of the Capital of Culture Tell Their Story

Story

Have you ever wondered, while wandering around Tartu, about the meaning behind the metal bends on some buildings’ end walls? Or noticed the magnificent mural decorating the wall of the hall where you attended lectures for weeks? An architectural tour through the city inspires you to notice the building art around us, which often fades into the background in our daily hustle.

Experience

The Architour series includes a total of four different tours or excursions, each focusing on a specific type of architectural or art heritage that has survived to this day but whose future may not be certain. Previous tours have centred on 20th-century collective farm architecture, 20th-century school buildings in South Estonia, and the Arhitekti Street area in Tartu. The tours are led by professional architectural historians and art scholars.

Impact

These tours present the urban space and history of Tartu from a new perspective, offering the joy of discovery to both locals and tourists.
