Info

The towers of the Town Hall, The Old Observatory, and St. John's Church will become a natural surround system to open the festival Baltic and Estonian Music Days with the premiere of composer Märt-Matis Lill's new work "The Call of Emajõgi." The audience will be treated to an experience that includes a unique ensemble and unexpected harmonies with the surrounding urban nature.

For the first time taking place in Tartu in its entirety, the festival Baltic and Estonian Music Days opens on the eastern slope of Toomemägi with an event that connects urban space and music, “The Call of Three Towers.” The new piece by Märt-Matis Lill serves as the fanfare for two historic events: Tartu as the European Capital of Culture and the first festival to be held entirely in Tartu. The composer chose the Emajõgi River as the initial source of inspiration for the piece, viewing it as one of the most emblematic features of Tartu, almost like a creature of its own kind, flowing through its own world. The textual material of the piece is based on the names given to the Emajõgi River in various languages throughout history.

The freshly created work “The Call of Emajõgi” by Märt-Matis Lill will be performed by:
Yena Choi (soprano)
Iris Oja (mezzo-soprano)
Laur Keller (trumpet)
Samuel Jalakas (trumpet)
Mihkel Kallip (trumpet)
Ivar Kiiv (trombone)
Hendrik Jaak Sepp (trombone)

In 2024 Tartu is the cultural capital of Europe. Therefore the festival Estonian Music Days will join forces with three neighboring countries to become a larger event that unites Baltic and Estonian Music Days. In addition to recognized Estonian ensembles and soloists, musicians from Latvia, Lithuania, and Finland are also expected.

The Festival Baltic and Estonian Music Days is a part of the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 main programme.
