DOWNPOUR GALLERY FROM TARTU: Daniel Viinalass gave a concert in pouring rain to mark the end of the Car-Free Avenue

European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 marked the end of this summer's Car-Free Avenue project with a performance by Tartu 2024 ambassador Daniel Levi, who delivered a powerful experience in pouring rain. Neither the residents of Tartu nor Daniel were deterred by it: "There was everything here, we managed to perform the first song dry, then the downpour started. I was completely amazed at how the people of Tartu stayed put. They took out their raincoats and umbrellas, some simply revelling in the rain; it was awesome to see

Viinalass is extremely passionate about representing the European Capital of Culture: "I am so proud that Tartu bears the title of European Capital of Culture. My first attempts at writing music, my first performances are all connected to Tartu. I have made all my first appearances within a radius of a few hundred metres from here. For me, it's so symbolic and so meaningful that Tartu carries this title."

The performers at the free open-air concerts curated by the capital of culture, held on the Car-Free Avenue this summer, included the Harkiv State Opera Theatre Choir and Alika Milova (June 29), Reket (July 3), Ivo Linna and Supernova (July 13), Gerli Padar-Parmas (July 15), Bedwetters (July 27), and Daniel Levi (August 3).

Take a look at the gallery to see how people defied the rain and enjoyed Daniel’s concert.
