Project 1984/2024 Literary Festival is an interdisciplinary festival, which
examines contemporary meanings of utopias and dystopias in an artistic and critical manner.
This project participates in the first Tartu 2024 culture and education programme development process, as a part of "Tartu with Humanity" programme line. Projects that successfully complete the process will advance to the official European Capital of Culture programme.

In 2024, 40 years will pass from George Orwell's famous dystopia's „1984“ symbolic year. This creates a great reason to get together with writers, cultural actors and academics from all over the world, to chart and rethink in an artistically diverse way our current dystopian fears and utopian hopes

The festival tries to make Tartu's literary world more open, enhance collaboration with other arts and walks of life, strengthen international ties and show visitors that Tartu is a city, where art really changes things.
