"Viitina Kuurits" is the legendary fishing competition. It is a unique opportunity to witness teams using this ancient fishing tool or even participate yourself. The event carries both old traditions and the goal of cleaning the shoreline. The Kuurits fishing competition features nearly twenty teams, often dressed in costumes, and also includes entertaining cultural programs on the lakeside.

“Viitina Kuurits” is one of the longest-standing events in Võrumaa. In 2024, the event will take place for the 27th time.

The program includes music, dance, workshops, discussions, and more interesting activities. Local accordion players will perform, and Margo Hurt will give a talk on the topic of “The Status of the European Crayfish and Addressing Its Threats.” There is also an adventure on the water open for young people, local cafés are open in the area, and the evening will conclude with a traditional Estonian village party known as a “simman.”

The event is child-friendly, family-friendly, and pet-friendly, and it is free for spectators.

Teams can register by sending an email to [email protected]. Each team should consist of 4 members, and the entry fee is €40, payable on-site.

Viitina Kuurits is a part of the main program of European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024.
