The House of Known Unknowns is a centre for Estonian dramaturgy created by the Estonian Theatre Agency, which will operate at the Tartu German Culture Institute during the 2024 Draama Festival. The project is a part of the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 main programme.

The House of Known Unknowns is a centre dedicated to dramaturgy that will operate during the 2024 Draama Festival, where audiences – both local and foreign – can get to know Estonian drama in depth. Also, with the House of Known Unknowns, the Estonian Theatre Agency, the main mediator and promoter of Estonian dramaturgy, celebrates its 30th anniversary.

There will be an interactive exhibition, discussions on playwriting and a three-day play reading marathon, that introduces 30 Estonian plays from different eras.

The play reading marathon will run from morning to evening and will be divided into 10 two-hour blocks. In each block, three plays from different eras will be read in succession. The aim of this grouping is to find connections, threads running through the texts, and characteristics peculiar to Estonian playwriting, through which entirely new and undiscovered narratives may emerge in the Estonian theatre history. The plays will be selected and grouped by dramaturgs Anne-Ly Sova (Endla Theatre) and Sven Karja (Theatre Vanemuine). Each block will be directed by a different director, including Estonian and foreign directors. Each block also includes video, lighting and sound design.

As the Estonian Theatre Agency values the accessibility of the event, the play-reading marathon will be accompanied by English translation and written translation. The event will also be broadcast live.
