Info

In the summer of 2024, a medieval mystery based on real-life events will unfold at Vastseliina castle. Vastseliina Episcopal Castle’s authentic milieu is the setting for a summer play based on the novel "Eavesdropper in Vastseliina '' by Erkki Koort.

The play brings us back to the beginning of the 14th century, when archers arrived from Pihkva one summer day to attack the walls of Vastseliina Episcopal Castle. The main character, Markus, is brought to the castle with a clear mission. The Pugola squad protecting the borders of Livonia in south-east Estonia has been hit by betrayal, and he must find the culprit. To find out whether the culprit will be found or not, what challenges will the young man face during his ordeals, and whether an unexpected love story might confuse his head, you have to come and see it for yourself. The goal of the play is to offer the audience an authentic atmosphere intertwined with the beauty of nature and historical surroundings.

Entrance to the castle is at 4 p.m.
During the preliminary program, it is possible to learn about medieval life in the medieval experience center, visit Anatoli Strahov’s painting exhibition “The Balance of Silence,” opened in the Pilgrim House, participate in authentic medieval-themed workshops, go on a tour with the folks of the castle, and buy some items at the craftsmen’s fair. Young visitors can test their skills on the adventurous “knight trail”. You can also enjoy food from medieval times and other eras.
The performance is in Estonian. It is possible to get a summary in ENG and LAT on the spot.
