Info

A 60-minute dance performance with live sound and vocals, co-created and performed by Kalli Pikas and Triinu Taul. The performance focuses on the phenomena of crying. Why do we cry? What makes us cry? When do we allow ourselves and others to cry? Does crying show weakness, strength, vulnerability, sincerity, all of the above, or something else entirely? Can crying heal and empower?

Kalli Pikas (director and choreographer) was born on April 1st. In Estonian folklore, children born on this date are said to be born with a river of tears – meaning that they cry a lot, because they share a birthday with the devil. Kalli has cried a lot all her life and always tried to hold it back, suppress it, be stronger. Only when she allowed herself to cry did the crying suddenly become much less. The performance focuses on the phenomena of crying and thus also on other emotions, allowing or denying these feelings. Kalli invited Triinu Taul, a sound and voice artist, as her creative partner to open and expand crying and other emotions also from the perspective of sound.
The creative team is interested in when we allow ourselves to cry, when and what kind of crying is permissible and what is crying in general. The performance also studies the emotional connections between different generations, the songs related to crying and the emotional impact of crying. What are we crying about? Why and what makes us cry? Can crying be healing? Does crying show weakness, strength, vulnerability, sincerity, all of the above, or something else?

“Crying wholeheartedly” is a 60-minute dance performance with live sound and voice, which will be presented to the audience three times in Tartu, in ERM’s Jakob Hurda Hall, and twice in Tallinn, in the KUMU Auditorium.

“Crying wholeheartedly” is a part of the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 side programme.
The creation of the performance is partly supported by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.
