The Association of Visual Artists of Tartu’s twin city Lüneburg will bring a representative art exhibition "Depicting the future" to Tartu, the European Capital of Culture 2024.
For many people, the present raises existential questions that go far beyond their own horizons. There are many changes everywhere. The past seems like a safe haven, but forming a picture of the future is a huge challenge that we have to face: Rapidly changing climatic conditions, many threats from societal changes and war, which is again directly affecting Europe. These are just a few of many.
But who are human beings and what makes them unique? What can the visual arts contribute to this topic?
What can AI do? Should artists produce AI-supported art to adapt to the zeitgeist and/or draw on their own experience and knowledge? We asked ourselves these and other questions in the group and discussed them a lot. The result is six positions that shed light on a very complex topic. The artists Ursula Blancke Dau, Eike Kuhse, Ulrike Hennecke, Uwe de Witt, Julia Kotenko and Jessica Kulp exhibit their paintings, graphics, photos and installations. An exhibition catalogue in Estonian and English will also be available. The German-side curator of the exhibition is Ursula Blancke Dau.
The works will subsequently be presented at the Heinrich Heine Haus in spring 2025, while an exhibition of Estonian artists will take place simultaneously in Lüneburg.
