The cooperation project of Tartu Art House and Pärnu City Gallery "Pärnu-Tartu Art Express" brings together the art of two Estonian cities. Cities that are distant in terms of distance, but close in terms of art. The aim of the project is to diversify the cultural life of the two cities with exhibition exchange program.

On April 12, 2024 at 5 p.m., 3 Pärnu exhibitions will be opened in Tartu Art House!
The exhibitions will remain open until 19.05.2024.

Opening in the large hall, the exhibition “Peculiarities of southwestern Estonian anarchism” presents the work of artists associated with Pärnu from the end of the 90s to the present day, focusing on performance and installation and excluding chronological order. The term “Southwest Estonian anarchism” refers to the activities of the Pärnu school outside the hierarchy of the art world. The exhibition presents nearly 100 photographic documentation and 50 video documentation as well as physical art objects. Billeneeve, Ville-Karel Viirelaid, Andrus Joonas, Tanel Saar, Siram, Sorge, Rauno Teider, Janno Bergmann, Cnopt, Art Container, Rubens, Tsirkus-Kunst-Teater “Põleva Kaelaga Kirjak” will participate in the exhibition with documentation of their works.
Curator: Janno Bergmann

The exhibition “MAN&MAN” (curator Jan Leo Grau) in the Monumental Gallery and “WOMAN&WOMAN” (curator Marian Grau) in the small hall focuses on the positions of men and women in today’s society. This exhibition format was part of the Pärnu Art Summer program for five years.

“MAN&MAN” explores notions of masculinity through artworks where artists such as Naro Pinosa and David Williams question traditional notions of masculinity.
“WOMAN&WOMAN” presents various strategies for surviving as a woman through the work of five female artists, such as Jill Peters’ documentation of the “sworn virgins” of Albania and Lilia Li Mi Yan’s photo series “Mature Beauty”.
Artists such as Valdek Laur, Arne Svenson, Sandra Jõgeva and others, whose works deal with sexuality, aging, pleasures and the influence of social media in today’s society, also participate in the exhibitions. Valeria Vavoom’s digital art and Mare Tralla’s installation “We still have a chicken to pluck” show different approaches to social issues and the struggle for equality and power.

“Pärnu-Tartu Art Express” is part of the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 additional program.
