We look forward to welcoming you to the opening of the project “ArCo Cubed – Artists in Collections, Communities and Collectives” at the Räpina Paper Factory on the 7h of June at 4 pm!

Artist Ingrid Allik (EST) together with artists Aigi Orav (EST), Tiina Kaljuste (EST), Kaisu Lundelin (FIN), Riikka Wesamaa (FIN) and Martin Allik (EST/SWE) and Räpina Paper Factory have created a new permanent landmark for public space called “Birches Cubed”, that interprets long history of local paper manufacturing through landscape design and different artefacts. By taking over a strip of grass, which was until recently quite useless as it was located between the parking lot and the entrance, Allik and her fellow artists established a deliberate and festive “gate”, which also functions as a space just for stopping and investigating. The installation combines landscape design and elements created by the artists which are characteristic of the history of producing paper in Räpina. Through such actions as mixing clay and paper dust left over by the factory, constructing new elements out of the edges produced by the factory and exhibiting packs of scrap paper, Allik composes an environment which invites the viewer to discover and touch.

“ArCo Cubed” is part of the main program of the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024, and in addition to Räpina, the project also includes: Järvselja Training and Experimental Forestry District (artist: Uku Sepsivart), the riverboat Lonny at the dam on the Ahja River in Taevaskoja (artists: Sigrid Viir and Līga Spunde) and the Tartu Observatory of the University of Tartu in Tõravere (artist: Karel Koplimets).
